Mobile museum

The National Museum is taking culture to the masses by sending its mobile unit to schools, department stores and communities.

The bright blue six-wheeler has made about 15 trips since its debut last September. The unit makes one or two trips a month. Its destinations are mostly schools, department stores and communities around Bangkok, but it has also made a few long-haul trips to Chiang Rai and Ratchaburi.

The right side of the truck features a 42 inch LCD television set which screens short documentaries about museums around the country.

The left side showcases replicas of ancient artifacts. The collection includes Ban Chiang pottery (a genuine piece is on display at Ban Chiang museum in Udon Thani), an ornate double-edged short sword and scabbard (the real one is on show at Sam Phraya museum in Ayutthaya), and a bronze lamp unearthed at Pong Tuek archaeological site in Kanchanaburi's Tha Maka district (Phra Nakhon museum in Bangkok hosts the authentic version).

Students and alcohol

Students have been advised to refrain from drinking alcohol during hazing activities because it could lead to brutality. The warning was issued yesterday by Dr Bundit Sornpaisan, director of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Rajanagarindra Institute.

It came after a freshman at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep complained to police that three senior students sprayed his back with paint from an aerosol can and then set fire to it, and forced him to dip his penis in water spiced with chili. He suffered serious burns.

The court has accepted charges against the three students filed by Thung Mahamek police and set July 22 for a verdict.

iPods can be dangerous

Listening to an iPod or other MP3 digital music player through earbuds for too long could lead to serious hearing problems, doctors warn. A recent study on the listening behaviour of Thai youngsters found they tended to stay tuned to loud music from these players for too long at one time.

Continuous exposure to music at more than a 90-decibel level for long periods can even cause deafness, said Wachara Riewpaiboon, manager of the health promotion plan for the disabled at the Thai Health Promotion Foundation.

A team of researchers has now started a deeper three-year study on the subject.

High fees - student suicide

A lack of funds to pay for university fees is being blamed for the deaths of many young people from poor families, but there is another solution which is not well publicised.

The good news is that more high school graduates are furthering their studies in universities. The bad news is that some are committing suicide because they lack the money to pay the fees.

The situation is "very unexpected", said secretary-general of the Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC), Sumeth Yamnoon. Read more!

Student suicide

At the young age of 22, Chaninart Rungthiwasuwan, a fourth-year student of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Science, had a bright future before her. The student had dreams to follow and hopes to fulfil.

That was until the morning of Monday, June 9, before she decided to take her own life by jumping from a building in the university compound. An eyewitness said the girl had a sad look on her face.

Initially, police linked stress and depression from study as the cause of her suicide.

With a bronze medal in the Academic Olympics chemistry competition to her credit, Chaninart had all along possessed an excellent academic record - her GPA was in the range of 3.8-3.9.

But it had been deteriorating since she was in her third year. Read more!

Climate Change Conference

On the strength of The Regent's School CO2 Reduction Competition, pupils received a special invitation to speak at the "Pata (Pacific Asia Tourism Association) CEO Challenge 2008 - Confronting Climate Change" conference.

Capitalizing on the school's commitment to climate change, and only a few days after Earth Day, students delivered a hard-hitting presentation that impacted hugely on the delegates, and has already resulted in offers of work experience, and an offer to speak in Sri Lanka!
